In Houston, Texas, in 1973, Ezra Idlet, Craig Calvert and Connie Mims started an acoustic trio named Wheatfield. The band was a key player among the Texas bands from the seventies, at the cusp of the emerging Texas music scene coming out of places like the Armadillo World Headquarters, Castle Creek, Kerrville Folk Festival and Liberty
In Houston, Texas, in 1973, Ezra Idlet, Craig Calvert and Connie Mims started an acoustic trio named Wheatfield. The band was a key player among the Texas bands from the seventies, at the cusp of the emerging Texas music scene coming out of places like the Armadillo World Headquarters, Castle Creek, Kerrville Folk Festival and Liberty Hall. The trio grew with talented players: "Beaver" Bob Russell on acoustic bass, followed by drummer/percussionist, Damian Hevia. Bob Russell left the band in 1976 and the bass position was then filled by Keith Grimwood, after their appearance on a startup public television show called Austin City Limits. Wheatfield, which eventually became known as St. Elmo's Fire, had a good run and then disbanded in 1979.
With strong bonds of friendship and a collaborative spirit, the foursome reunited in 2004 to write, record and perform together again, and have enjoyed every minute of it.

Wheatfield continues to have a passion for performing for their longtime enthusiastic fans, and year to year, when all the stars align, they come together to write, record, share life, and even play a few public venues and private events.

Their latest recording project, "Some People" displays all that is Wheatfield: well-built songs delivered with strong vocals and a variety of instrumentation and styles.

Houston Folk Music Archives
Wheatfield was honored to be inducted into the Houston Folk Music Archives for the Woodson Reseach Center's Special Collections & Archives at the Fondren Public Library at Rice University, Houston, Texas. On November 1st, 2017, the band recorded an extensive oral/video history to be part of the archives. It's a fun look back to how they each got started in music to how the band progressed from 1973 to its final days in 1979. Most of the band's memorabilia, including photos, show posters, recordings, etc., is now housed in the university's archives and can be accessed by the public.
